About
Julian spent 20 years creating tightly controlled commercial 3D renderings for product design, marketing and advertising before moving into professional photography. Both of these disciplines have contributed enormously to his understanding of light and form. However, creating such technically demanding and polished images in the commercial sphere have left him with a desire to create art with simpler tools where rough marks and surprising colours contribute to the final result. His desire is to create beautiful images that transcend the medium and the process of creating it.
The works of art in these galleries are all created with digital tools. This is not the same as squeezing a tube of paint of course, but it does involve the same assessment of light, tone and form and the ability to translate that into another medium.
These are not manipulated photos, filtered to make them look like a painting, neither are they tracings of a reference image, all of them are hand painted from a blank screen.
